Immigration to the United States in 1856

Almost 85% of immigrants come from Great Britain, Ireland and Germany. The majority are men between the ages of 15 and 40, with no occupation or are general laborers.

200,436 immigrants enter the United States:

> 35.4% come from the German states;

> 27.1% come from Ireland;

> 22.3% come from Great Britain;

> 6.2% come from Northwest Europe (France, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland);

> 3.2% come from Canada;

> 2.4% come from China;

> 1.3% come from Central and South America, including Mexico;

> 0.7% come from Italy;

> 0.7% come from Scandinavia:

> 0.7% come from other regions and other countries.

Sex and age:

> 42.2% are female;

> 57.8% are male;

> 63.2% are between the ages of 15 and 40;

> 19.0% are under age 15;

> 17.8% are over age 40.

Occupations by major categories:

> 58.2% have no occupation–this includes children;

> 16.5% are general laborers;

> 11.0% are farmers;

> 8.4% are skilled craft workers;

> 4.9% are commercial workers;

> 0.8% are domestic workers;

0.2% are professional workers.
